This Week:I cannot believe it is the last week of genius hour. It flew by so quickly. The project was a good experience and I am glad I had the opportunity to do it. It was fun to be able to try something new even if it was not successful at some points. For the last week of genius hour, I worked really hard on getting Pandora to get the last trick. She sort of got it. She stood up but only for a second. I did not have time to add a command to it, but I will work with her on that after genius hour. I was worried she was not going to get it and I would not meet my goal of teaching her three tricks. After she got the trick, I worked on perfecting the tricks with Pandora. I wanted to make sure they looked good on video before I presented. Throughout the week, I worked on doing my presentation which took up a good bit of time. I finished editing all my videos and uploaded them to my presentation. The video was hard to make because I do not know how to work editing apps, but I think that would be something cool to learn outside of genius hour. Overall, I have learned a lot through this process. I have became more patient and Pandora has learned to listen better. I think this project was fun and beneficial. I would probably not do it again though, it was pretty stressful and complicated at some points.

This Week:So far, I have learned many things from this experience. For me personally, I have learned to be more patient and working on my communication skills. Pandora has learned new tricks and this process has helped her work on her listening skills. My main focus this week was working on my presentation. I started editing videos and putting them together. I want to remake some of the videos, so they look better. Throughout the beginning of the week, I did not have a lot of time to work with Pandora. By the end of the week, I had some time to work with her. I did not get to work with her as much as I hoped I could have. When I had time, I worked on teaching her the trick of standing tall. Sadly, she did not get it. This made me a little stressed because we only have one week left, but I am going to work hard to be able to teach her it. Instead of dedicating one day to working with her, I will dedicate more time to be able to complete my goal of teaching Pandora three tricks. Next Week:This upcoming week, I am going to finish up my presentation and editing videos. After teaching Pandora the new trick, I will work on perfecting the tricks with Pandora. My goal will be to try and get better videos of us doing the tricks. I hope I will be to teach Pandora the new trick in time.
This Week:This week for genius hour, I debated between teaching Pandora how to stand tall (stand on hine legs) or how to spin. I researched the steps for both. I did debate whether or not I should try again to teach her how to roll over, but I decided not to do that trick again. I decided to go with teaching Pandora how to stand on her hine legs. The first step is putting a treat up to the dog’s nose and move your hand up higher. The dog will stand on it’s hine legs trying to get the treat. After the dog completes the trick reward them. My first initial thought was this trick will be easy and simple, but honestly it was very easy. I followed the steps I was given. Pandora sat and just stared at the treat. I gave her a break and then we were back to work. She finally got it! Next Week:Next time, I plan making sure she knows all the tricks we have learned over the twelve weeks. Since she learned three different tricks, I am not going to teach her anymore. Instead I am going to work on perfecting these tricks. I will start next week off with reviewing all the previous tricks. My hope is by the end of the twelve weeks Panodra will have perfected a total of three tricks: how to shake, high five, and stand tall.
This Week:This week I started off with reviewing old tricks for five minutes and then I moved on to continue to teach Pandora how to high five. I followed all the previous steps I had researched. She started to get the command and followed along. Pandora sort of completed the task. She put her paw up, but it wasn't full high five. I decided it was good enough and moved on. After this I decided to call it a day. Next Time:As we’re reaching the end of genius hour I decided I should end this with a good trick. Throughout the next week, my goal is to research different tricks and choose one to start teaching her. I will look at various tricks and decide which one would be best to teach her. I will use the next three weeks to teach her the trick. My hope is by the end of the week she will have mastered this trick.
This Week:Last week was spring break, so I did not get to work with Pandora. My hope is she remembers most of the tricks from the previous weeks. After finding out that dogs can only stay focused for ten to fifteen minutes, I decided to change how we normally do the lesson. I decided to work with her for thirty minute period and take a break every ten minutes. For the first ten minutes, we started by reviewing old tricks. It started a little slow. She wasn’t as quick to remember the tricks as I hoped she would be. I continued to work with her on reviewing past tricks. After the first ten minutes, I decided it would be best if we used the next ten minutes to work on tricks. I believe the one week off did not help Pandora. She is forgetting some of the commands. Next Week:So far, from the whole process, I have learned to be a lot more patient with Pandora. She has a very short attention span which can be agitating at times, but I am working on being more patient. Throughout the upcoming week, I will try to work with Pandora whenever I have time. I will continue to try to teach her how to high five. I will follow the steps from the previous vlog.
This Week:This week for genius hour I will decide to started with reviewing old tricks. Thankfully, Pandora remembered all of the tricks. This week I want to try and stay more patient with Pandora. I will try to not rush her through the tricks but instead take time in teaching her. I decided to roll over one last attempt. I figured she would not be able to complete the task, but I wanted to give it one last try. She still did not catch on, which is what I figured would happen. I will possibly come back to that trick if I have time at the end of the twelve weeks, but for now, it is off the table. I moved on and stayed committed to teaching her how to high five. I followed all the steps from the previous vlog. I had hoped she would get it this time, but nothing seemed successful. Next Time:For next time, I am going to continue working with Pandora and teaching her how to high five. For some reason, this journey is going downhill. Pandora does not want to stay focused and she is becoming stubborn. I am going to stay patient and work with her on staying focused. In the beginning, I expected her to have a short attention span since she is younger and hyper. I researched ways to help keep a dog focused. Google said dogs cannot stay focused for longer than ten to fifteen minutes. From now on, I will do shorter lessons or take breaks every ten minutes. This will help her stay focused and give her breaks. I am going to stick with keeping her away from distractions and I hope the upcoming week will go better than this week.
The Process:This week for genius hour, I was sorta successful in teaching Pandora how to roll over. I repeated all of the steps from the previous blog. This time she did it with me just doing the hand motion. She still does not know the command, but I will continue practicing that with her. I moved on to teaching Pandora how to high five. I believe this one will be easy for her since she understood how to shake so quickly. I researched the steps to teach a dog how to high five. The first step is to tell your dog to sit and put a treat in your hand. Place your hand out and cover the treat with your thumb. Your dog will paw at your hand trying to get the treat. Give them the treat and praise them. Then repeat. Slowly start to move your hand upwards. After your dog is constantly giving you a high five, you can add a command. I followed the steps, but she was distracted by surrounding things and did not pay attention very well. I stayed patient and decided we should stop for the day. This time I was not as successful as I was on my previous vlogs. I think as I progress in teaching her harder tricks, it will be more of a challenge for her to catch on. Next Time:I am now realizing Pandora has a short attention span, so I think longer tricks might not be the way to go with her. For next time, I might move to teaching easier and less complicated tricks. I think teaching her how to roll over is too many steps for her. I will continue to try and teach her how to high five. Possibly in the future, I will attempt again to teach her how to roll over.
The Process:Last week, I was not too successful when trying to teach Pandora how to roll-over. This week I am going to attempt again. I am going to try and follow the same steps as last time. The steps are to tell your dog to lay down and then move a treat across their shoulder. The dog will follow the treat causing them to roll-over. This week, I started moving Pandora to a secluded area. I started this week by going over old tricks. After going overtricks, I attempted to teach her how to roll-over again. I followed each step and repeated it. She started to follow the treat and rolled over. Then, I tried to add the roll-over command and she did not catch on to that. I repeated the steps and kept saying the command. After a little, she still did not understand the command but she did roll-over when I did the motions. I was not too successful this time, but I want to continue trying to teach her this trick with a command. Next Time:Next time, I want to continue teaching her how to roll-over. She knows the basic steps but does not understand the command. After she fully understands the command and knows how to roll-over, I will move on and try to teach Pandora how to high five. I will research the basic steps to teaching a dog how to high five. Due to shake and high five being a similar trick I think she will catch on easily. I want to continue keeping her away from distractions and other animals. I think it helps her stay focused throughout the lesson.
The Process:For the fourth week of genius hour, I want to try to teach pandora how to roll over. I watched a YouTube video made by Chewy on the best ways to teach a dog how to roll over. First, you tell them to lay down. Use a treat or toy to get their attention. Move the treat or toy to their shoulder. This will make the dog have to lay on its side. After the dog lays on its side give them the treat. Repeat that step, but now move the treat father so the dog starts to lay on its back. Continue moving the treat and your dog should follow. After doing this a couple of times add a command and even a hand signal. Your dog should start to catch on and get the hang of it. Some dogs might be uncomfortable laying on their back at first, so it might take a couple of tries. I first started with seeing if Pandora remembered how to shake, which she did. I attempted to use a toy to teach her how to roll over, but all she wanted to do was play. I moved on and used a treat. I spent about forty-five minutes trying to teach her how to roll over, but nothing seemed to work. She would not listen, so I am going to try again next week. Next Time:I want to continue and try to teach Pandora how to roll over. I want to use the same method as I did last time. I think I should spend more time working with her. Next time, I need to try and make her do it all in one instead of doing it in separate steps. I believe that is where I messed up on this lesson.
The Process:This week, I spent a while trying to teach Pandora how to shake. By the end, she finally learned how to shake. Before trying to teach her how to shake, I researched methods online on how to teach a dog how to shake. The website said to hold out your hand with your palm facing up. Naturally, your dog should paw at you. When they paw at you, quickly put out your palm and say shake. Repeat these steps over and over. Afterward, you should give them treats and reward them. I decided to try this method with Pandora and it paid off. First I put her in a secluded room so there were no distractions. Then I went over old basic tricks. Next, I sat beside her and put out my hand. At first, she had no reaction and just wanted the treat. I put the treats away and put my hand out again. She pawed at my hand and I told her to shake. Repeating the word shake will help her better understand the command. I repeatedly put my hand out many times. After a while, I would say shake and she would catch on. She slowly started to understand the command. After repeating many times she finally understood. I gave her a treat every time she got it. Next Time:For now I think it is best if I look up methods on how to teach dogs certain tricks. For each new trick I will research on the best ways to teach a dog. I think it helped me a lot knowing how to properly teach her. Also, keeping Pandora in a secluded area definitely helped her not be as distracted as she was last time. She stayed focused and didn't run off as much.
